Osteoarthritis is a condition in which the cartilage of the joint is degenerated. Individuals with osteoarthritis may experience swelling or pain in the joint, morning stiffness, weakness in the muscles surrounding the joint and impaired function. The most common joints affected by osteoarthritis are the hip and knee. Physiotherapy is effective in managing these symptoms through: range of motion exercises, strengthening of muscles around the affected joint and therapeutic modalities to improve pain. Education regarding the type (e.g. swimming) and appropriate amount of exercise will also be provided.
