Acupuncture is a complementary medical practice that involves stimulating different points in the body to decrease pain and treat various health conditions. This is most commonly done with fine needles, but can also include vacuum cupping and burning of a herb called Moxa. The first written mention of acupuncture in China was around 100 BC, but it is likely that the practice is even older than that.
The traditional belief is that disruption of energy flow leads to disease. Acupuncture works by restoring proper flow of this energy to the body. Western acupuncture, however, focuses on the science behind why acupuncture works. Different theories that have been studied include mechanisms involving neural, hormonal and biochemical responses in the body.
